'You misunderstood us' - Meta claims it did not threaten to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe

Meta has stated that it has "absolutely no desire to leave Europe". The company clarified that it was misunderstood and that it did not threaten to remove Facebook and Instagram from European countries due to the uncertainty surrounding the transatlantic confidentiality agreement between America and the European Union.

Meta published a blog post in which it vehemently denies that it has ever threatened to shut down access to its core web resources, such as Facebook and Instagram, in the European Union. The company noted that it was simply "identifying a business risk associated with uncertainty regarding international data transfers."

International data transfer is at the heart of the global economy and supports many services that are fundamental to our daily lives. Businesses across industries need clear global rules to protect transatlantic data flows in the long term.

The company previously said it "probably won't be able to offer some of its most important products and services, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe" unless the US and European Union ratify a new data transfer agreement. The company also stated that it cannot depend on other existing mechanisms.

After that, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck and French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said that Europe would do just fine without Facebook and Instagram.
