On February 11, 2022, Intel introduced its first high-performance, low-power chip for cryptocurrency mining.
Intel has not yet disclosed the technical specifications of its ASIC. The company will talk about it in more detail on February 23 at the ISSCC (International Solid-State Circuits Conference).
The head of the graphics division of Intel, Raja Koduri, said that the company has big plans in this direction and is going to enter the blockchain market. He clarified that the new Intel chip has a performance per watt that is 1,000 times higher than conventional mining GPUs based on the SHA-256 algorithm.
Koduri revealed that Intel already has the first customers for the new chip. Mining companies Argo Blockchain and GRIID Infrastructure, as well as BLOCK (formerly Jack Dorsey's Square) will receive it for testing.
Intel explained that "the architecture of the chip is implemented on a tiny piece of silicon, so its production has a minimal impact on the supply of current products" of the company.
On January 18, the media reported that Intel is going to release equipment for mining bitcoins. According to them, the company's first chip was named Bonanza Mine. This is an energy efficient ASIC for bitcoin mining.
