YouTube spoke about its plans for the metaverse and NFT

Video hosting Youtube decided to ride the wave of popularity of Web3.0 and blockchain. On the hosting's official blog and on his Twitter, Youtube Product Director Neil Mohan talked about the service's roadmap and how happy he is with the new features slated to launch in 2022.

Mohan stated that the service is seriously considering the idea of using blockchain with NFT tokens and the concept of a metaverse. The press release says:

“Web3 opens up new possibilities for authors. We believe that new technologies such as blockchain and NFTs can enable creators to develop relationships with their fans. Together they will be able to collaborate on new projects and earn money in ways that were not possible before. For example, giving fans the opportunity to enjoy unique videos, photos, artwork, and even experiences from their favorite creators.”

Mohan, along with the rest of the service, believes that there is potential in these technologies, and they will approach their implementation responsibly. Whether NFT tokens will be subject to copyright law (at least in the US) is not mentioned in the press release.

Speaking of the metaverse, the product director explained that the service wants to make watching videos "more immersive." In the blog, he focused on the games being released on the platform and that the service wants to bring more interaction and make them more alive. How this will be implemented is not very clear. The last interactive implementation of Youtube and games was a few years ago, but few people used this feature. I would also like to remind you that Google closed Stadia's internal game development studios and removed the cloud gaming service from development priority.

Perhaps the new Google Stream project is the innovation Mohan is talking about. I would like to note that users and players do not perceive the words NFT, metaverse and game in one ad very well. For example, the developers of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was criticized by the players after the announcement of the creation of its own metaverse and the launch of NFT items. The same fate awaited the developers of Teams 17. It is worth mentioning the scandals related to NFT fraud.

If these risks of YouTube, together with its product director, were taken into account, then, perhaps, users of the service are really waiting for innovative solutions.
