Capcom to pay $12M to amicably settle lawsuit over use of unlicensed images for games

Japanese corporation Capcom has agreed to pay compensation in the amount of $12 million to designer Judy Yuracek. Last summer, she sued the company, accusing Capcom of using her photos without permission in the games Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry.

Juracek stressed that Capcom borrowed image content from her Surfaces book for their projects. The designer's photographs are copyrighted. Part of the evidence Yuracek received as a result of a Capcom data breach that occurred in November 2020. The company was the victim of a ransomware attack that led to the theft of hundreds of thousands of pieces of information, including the names and addresses of customers and former employees.

According to Juraček, Capcom used more than 80 images in their games. Her lawyers demanded that she be awarded compensation for copyright infringement in the amount of $12 million, as well as from $2.5 thousand to $25 thousand for each photo.

This week, both sides announced a peaceful settlement of the conflict, which was preceded by a decision to pay Yuracek $12 million.

Last May, Dutch director Richard Raaforst accused Capcom of using his work without permission to design one of the bosses in the Resident Evil Village shooter. The plaintiff alleges that the company borrowed the undead soldier's appearance and accompanying effects from the 2013 film Frankenstein's Army.
