Electric vehicles will cause power outages and electricity prices to rise in Europe

Audit firm Ernst & Young, together with the European association of the electric power industry Eurelectric, predicted how the growing market for electric vehicles will affect the European electric grid.

In the next 13 years, the number of electric vehicles in Europe should increase from 3 to 130 million cars. Experts say that the massive transition to electric vehicles will be accompanied by frequent power surges, loss of power and rising energy prices.

By 2030, 34 million electric vehicle charging stations should be installed in Europe, by 2035 their number will increase to 65 million. At the same time, analysts say that most should be installed in residential buildings, since charging an electric car at home costs 60– 80% cheaper than public stations.

According to experts, the current power grids in Europe are ready to withstand up to 100 million electric vehicles. But in the future, to avoid problems with electricity, owners of electric vehicles may be banned from charging at home during the day and the use of public stations will be significantly limited.

Peak load on European electricity grids will increase by 90% by 2030. Installing home charging stations will cost around 115 billion euros. A significant increase in electricity prices is also expected.
