Kaspersky Lab with Interpol prevented a cyber-robbery of the central bank in Latin America

Kaspersky Lab spoke about an investigation conducted jointly with Interpol, which prevented the theft of funds from the central bank of one of the Latin American countries.

The attacker was able to gain access to the entire infrastructure of the bank, including the system of international financial transfers. Hacking was discovered at the stage when the attacker was trying to find partners for further attack.

According to experts, such a scheme has become especially common in the last couple of years. In this scenario, different people are responsible for different stages of the attack: some hack organizations, others carry out the attack, for example, encrypt and steal data, others demand a ransom and take on the financial part.

In Kaspersky Lab, I found stolen data when it was offered as evidence of infiltration into the organization. To prevent any further actions by the attackers, the company reported the incident to Interpol and the International Payment System. After a joint investigation, all vulnerabilities in the bank's corporate network were closed and opportunities for attack were blocked.

Stephen Kavanagh, Executive Director of the Interpol Police Service, said:

In recent years, we have seen many ransomware attacks carried out by such hybrid groups. However, previously their targets were mainly commercial companies. We are very pleased that, together with our partner Kaspersky Lab, we managed to prevent an attack that could have affected the economy of an entire country. After all, only by effectively cooperating at the international level and working proactively can we ensure the protection of the entire community.”
