Apple to Sue for Tab Switchers on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch

SpaceTime3D is suing Apple alleging that app multitasking and Safari tabs on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch infringe its 3D user interface patents. SpaceTime3D is a software developer.

The company filed a complaint Thursday in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas over three contested patents filed by the company, one of which was first filed in 2007. The lawsuit alleges that Apple's App Switcher and Safari Tab View features infringe its patents. They cover a way to improve the user experience on small devices by displaying content in three dimensions. These features allow users to easily browse multiple tabs or open apps and switch between devices such as an iPad or Apple Watch.

SpaceTime3D claims that company founder Ezra Bakhash was demonstrating the technology to an unnamed Apple executive. The lawsuit says SpaceTime3D technology is stunning and time-saving. The plaintiff also stated that Apple did try to patent the technology for itself. However, since the patent belongs to SpaceTime3D, his application was rejected. SpaceTime3D seeks a jury trial and a guilty verdict for Apple in patent infringement. SpaceTime3D wants the Cupertino-based company to pay court fees, including damages and attorneys' fees.

Last week, Apple was sued over the "jelly screen" in the current iPad mini.
