Rocket launch with US military satellite had to be postponed due to fuel leak

The US has postponed the launch of the Atlas 5 launch vehicle with a US military satellite. The cause was a fuel leak in the ground storage.

“The launch of the ULA Atlas V 551 rocket with the US Space Force STP-3 test program has been postponed. During preparatory operations, a leak was discovered in the ground storage system of RP-1 missile fuel, ”said the United Launch Alliance (ULA), an alliance of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

The new launch date was set for December 6. at 12:04 Moscow time. The rocket will be launched from the Cape Canaveral launch site in Florida. It will launch the military satellite STPSat-6 into orbit.

Atlas 5 missiles are scheduled to be completely decommissioned by the mid-2020s. ULA has 29 more launches to be carried out with this rocket. They will be carried out by orders of the US Department of Defense, NASA, Amazon and other commercial customers.

Atlas 5 uses Russian RD-180 engines manufactured by Energomash. However, the company, at the request of the US Congress, stopped their purchases. In September, the United Launch Alliance confirmed that all Russian-powered rockets have already been sold out.
