British insurer: VR claims up 31% in 2021

According to the British insurance company Aviva, gamers in virtual reality are increasingly damaging their property. Claims for damages related to VR headsets increased by 31% last year and by 68% compared to 2016. As a rule, players break TVs.

Aviva said that in 2021, the average VR-related accidental damage claim was around £650.

So, one client was playing next to the TV when a zombie appeared in front of him during the game. In another case, a child broke two designer figurines on a mantelpiece. There is already a separate discussion on Reddit with videos of gamers antics in VR.

Aviva accepted all of these claims and paid compensation. However, the company urged VR headset users to be careful and check if their insurance rate can cover such risks.

The insurer notes that as many UK residents receive VR headsets as Christmas gifts, the company has already received a flood of new compensation claims in 2022.

At the end of 2021, the Oculus app topped the Apple App Store for the first time thanks to the demand for the Meta Quest 2 headset. Qualcomm CEO Christiano Amon said in November that Meta had shipped about 10 million units latest version of its VR headset.

In November, Oculus already released an update to the Quest 2 headsets to prevent players from bumping into or hitting children, pets, or things nearby. The Space Sense feature shows the user in real time that someone has physically entered their safe space.
