OM System OM-1 Micro Four Thirds camera introduced

OM Digital Solutions has unveiled its first Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera. The novelty is called OM System OM-1. It has a CMOS-type sensor with a resolution of 20.4 megapixels with a multilayer layout. Each sensor pixel is used for phase detection autofocus.

As you know, OM Digital Solutions is the new owner of the division of Olympus, specializing in the production of photographic equipment. Not surprisingly, the camera's name refers to the iconic Olympus OM-1 film camera introduced 50 years ago. However, the new model is more similar in design and performance to its recent Micro Four Thirds predecessors such as the E-M1 Mark III.

The burst shooting speed reaches 10fps with the mechanical shutter, but it increases to 120fps with the electronic shutter. If AF and metering continue during continuous shooting, the speed will reach 50 fps. The mechanical shutter is rated for 400,000 operations.

The camera is capable of shooting 4K (UHD or DCI) video at up to 60 fps and Full HD (1080p) video at up to 240 fps. Removable media can record video using the H.264 codec and 8-bit color information or the H.265 codec and 10-bit color information. When connected to an external recording device, the OM-1 can output 12-bit RAW video with 4:4:4 subsampling. When shooting in 10-bit, you can use the Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) profile for HDR TVs or the new OM-Log format to capture additional detail in highlights and shadows to make the most of your footage in post-processing.

The camera is equipped with an image stabilization system in five degrees of freedom, which provides a gain of up to 8 EV. This system is also used for high-definition shooting, capable of capturing images up to 50 megapixels when shooting handheld and up to 80 megapixels when shooting on a tripod.

The Cross Quad Pixel AF autofocus system has 1053 cross-type points used for phase focusing. They are used in autofocus modes that work on artificial intelligence algorithms and are able to recognize cars, motorcycles, airplanes, helicopters, trains, birds, dogs and cats in the frame.

An interesting feature of the OM-1 is its multi-frame shooting modes, including Live ND, which takes multiple images and combines them to replicate the effect of using a slow shutter speed with a neutral density filter to add motion blur to an image. Other capture modes inherited from previous models include Live Composite mode, which helps preserve highlights in long exposure shots, Focus Stacking mode, and built-in HDR mode.

The camera is equipped with a 5.76M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder supporting a refresh rate of 120fps and a 1.62M-dot 3-inch movable touchscreen display. There are two SD UHS-II slots for removable media. The degree of protection of the camera is IP53. The chamber is guaranteed to operate at temperatures down to -10°C. With dimensions of 135 x 92 x 73 mm, the camera weighs 511 g.

The OM-1 is expected to go on sale in early March 2022 for $2,200. A kit with the new M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 PRO II lens is priced at $2,800. Optional accessories include the HLD019 Battery Grip ($350), RM-WR1 Wireless Remote Controller ($100), BLX1 Battery Pack ($100), and BCX-1 Charger ($150).
