Scientists photographed 152 young men and women without makeup and with a neutral expression, and then asked 492 volunteers to rate which of these people is the most attractive. The highest scores were found in people with the highest levels of phagocytosis, the process by which white blood cells destroy bacteria before they can harm the body. “Thanks to modern medicine, infections aren’t as deadly as they used to be, so maybe it’s okay for people to lower their standards and start giving less attractive people a chance,” the researchers said.
