Disney Appoints Head of Metaverse Strategy

Disney CEO Bob Chapek has appointed Mike White to lead the Metaverse Entertainment Strategy. However, the company has not provided details of how it will earn in this area.

White has been with Disney for ten years. Prior to his new appointment, he was Executive Director of the Media and Entertainment Distribution Group. White's new post is titled senior vice president of next generation storytelling and customer experience. He will work with Disney's creative teams and evaluate client perceptions of the metaverse.

In an email to corporate employees, Chapek writes that Disney has been defining and reimagining entertainment for nearly a century using modern technology to tell stories in deeper and more effective ways. He adds that the company now has the opportunity to unite the Disney universes within the metaverse.

In November, Capek said he was ready to begin the journey into the metaverse, which he called the next great frontier and part of Disney's strategic priorities. According to the head of the company, the metaverse will improve the storytelling by combining elements of the material and digital worlds.

White has 25 years of experience in technology. Prior to Disney, he was a director at Apollo and prior to that he spent nine years at Yahoo, including as director of strategy and technology. In his new role, White will report to Disney Media and Entertainment and Disney Parks chairman Kareem Daniel and Josh D'Amaro.

Of all the major companies, the biggest bet on the metaverse has been Facebook, which renamed Meta last October. The corporation has already spent $10 billion to build virtual reality hardware and software. Meta promises to introduce an expanded version of its headset before the end of this year.
