AI will be able to predict future pandemics

By 2025, artificial intelligence will be able to predict the emergence of new strains of viruses, Mikhail Burtsev, AIRI Director for Fundamental Research and Chairman of the Scientific Coordination Council of the MIPT Research Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence Systems, said.

“AI could have predicted the appearance of the omicron. People have not yet developed methods forecasting. Maybe someone has already begun to do this, but since this is research at the forefront of science, and not well-established technology, it has not kept pace with the evolution of viruses. Therefore, it was not possible to take preventive measures. I think that in 2-3 years such a prediction will become possible,” the expert said.

Burtsev also noted that neural networks could predict the emergence of new strains of coronavirus. According to him, this requires data on how other viruses have mutated.

“With this information, we can build a model that predicts which mutations are more likely and which are less likely. In this sense, we can predict the evolution of the virus itself. We must consider the problem of predicting their variability: which elements of the nucleotide sequence are more likely to change. We can do this if there is data on the variability of similar viruses. Then you can build a model that will predict mutations based on the environment,” the expert explained.

Burtsev also said in an interview that in the future, voice assistants will be able to predict the desires of users.
