Album of Endangered Birds Beats ABBA and The Weekend on Australia's Top Music Chart

The album, which featured recordings of endangered birds singing, peaked at number 5 on Australia's main ARIA music chart, overtaking renowned artists such as The Weeknd and ABBA.

The album Songs of Disappearance consists of recordings of 53 of Australia's rarest critically endangered birds singing. This is the first such album to reach the top 5 on the ARIA charts.

“In a way, this is not surprising. Australians in general today are noticeably alarmed by the environmental crisis we are all facing, and the fact that the unique and incredible species that live in Australia are also facing it, ”explains co-author Anthony Albrecht, PhD student at Charles Darwin University and co-founder of The Bowerbird Collective.

Recordings by wildlife researcher and sound engineer David Stewart, included in his Nature Sound catalog, were used to create the tracks. Stewart has been creating it for 40 years, traveling to remote corners of Australia. As Anthony Albrecht notes, "at times Stewart would wait in ambush for hours to hear the short singing of some of the rarest birds." The title track, arranged by Simone Slattery, features singing from all 53 of the album's songs.

Over 3,000 copies of Songs of Disappearance have been sold to date. The proceeds from the sale of the album will support BirdLife Australia's efforts to conserve endangered bird species.
