Desktop processor for mobile computers? Intel may release 16-core Core i9-12980HX for powerful gaming laptops and workstations

Several insiders have pointed out that Intel is preparing powerful Alder Lake-HX mobile processors for laptops. The top model with eight high-performance cores and eight energy-efficient ones has already been sent to the company's partners for testing and creating ready-made devices based on it.

The top Alder Lake laptop model currently has 14 processing cores - six high-performance and eight energy-efficient. That is, the new model will be a step higher, especially if the frequencies rise.

Interestingly, the possibility of releasing Alder Lake-HX was discussed last year. Then they were credited with packaging S-BGA, TDP 45-55 W and an integrated GPU with 32 execution units. All this points to the "rework" of Alder Lake desktop processors for a laptop format. According to the source now, the top 16-core and 24-thread model will be called the Core i9-12980HX. Nothing is said about the timing of the announcement, but it could well take place at Computex 2022 at the end of May. If so, then laptops based on the Core i9-12980HX will be on sale in late summer and early autumn.
