iPhone SE with 5G and the new iPad Air: what Apple showed during the presentation

Apple held a presentation of new products on March 8. The company has unveiled a range of devices, including the iPhone SE with 5G, a new version of the iPad Air, and Mac Studio, a desktop PC with a powerful new processor.

Phone SE

Not much has changed for the small, inexpensive iPhone since the 2020 update. This time, Apple has equipped the smartphone with the A15 Bionic processor, which previously appeared in the iPhone 13 models. This means that this budget iPhone model is almost as functional as expensive iPhones. Apple claims that the chip provides the best battery life. The smartphone also received support for 5G. The SE is equipped with a 12-megapixel main camera, which allows you to use features found in mainstream iPhone models, such as Photographic Styles and Deep Fusion. There is also a 7-megapixel selfie camera.

The new iPhone SE does not support the MagSafe Accessory System. Apple introduced MagSafe with the iPhone 12. The system allows accessories such as wireless chargers, wallets, and batteries to be attached to the back of the phone using a magnet.

Phone SE received a 4.7-inch LCD display, Ceramic Shield glass front and back, IP67 water resistance, a Home button and Touch ID. It comes in black, silver and red. The device will go on sale March 18 for $429.

Meanwhile, new colors have become available for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro—green and alpine green, respectively.

M1 Ultra

Apple showed another processor from its own M1 line - M1 Ultra. It's essentially two M1 Max chips fused using a chip technology that Apple calls UltraFusion. According to Apple senior vice president of hardware engineering John Turnus, the M1 Ultra offers 128GB of graphics memory and has seven times as many transistors as the base M1 chip.

Mac Studio

Apple has announced the Mac Studio system unit, similar to the Mac Mini, but in a larger size. It has four Thunderbolt ports, two USB-A slots, an HDMI port, and a headphone jack on the back. The front panel houses two USB-C ports and an SD card slot. Mac Studio supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Apple claims that the user will be able to simultaneously display the image from the device to four XDR monitors and a 4K TV. Mac Studio will ship with either the M1 Max or the new M1 Ultra chip.

The company also introduced a new 27-inch Studio Display monitor. It's built into one of Apple's A13 Bionic chips, which powers iOS right in the monitor, essentially turning the display into a giant mobile device. The screen is 5K resolution with special textured glass options to eliminate glare. There is a 12-megapixel webcam on the front, while the display has a set of microphones and an array of six speakers that provide spatial audio.

Mac Studio starts at $1,999 with the M1 Max chip and $3,999 with the M1 Ultra. The display starts at $1599.

Pad Air

The biggest update to the iPad Air is the inclusion of an Apple-designed M1 chip, the same chip found in the iPad Pro and some MacBooks. Apple claims this provides a 60% performance boost over the previous iPad Air. It also makes the fifth-generation tablet twice as fast as "the best-selling Windows laptop in its price range," Angelina Kyazike, product development manager for iPad, said during the event.

The tablet's display is slightly brighter, and its front camera now includes a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera. This means the device supports a software feature called Center Stage, which keeps people centered in the frame during video calls and makes FaceTiming more convenient.

The tablet will start selling on March 11, it will cost $599. The iPad Air will come in 64GB and 256GB configurations.

What was not shown

Apple didn't mention a release date for iOS 15.4, which supposedly will improve AirTag support and face ID even when wearing a mask. This release is expected to be announced soon, possibly next week.
