Amazon Prime Video is in talks with Sony to produce a TV Live-Action series based on the God of War games, internal sources told DEADLINE. The adaptation will be led by The Expanse sci-fi series executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, and The Wheel Of Time executive producer Rafe Judkins. Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions will also be involved in the development.
The first game in the God of War series was released in 2005 for the Play Station 2. Subsequent series (and spin-offs) were released in 2007, 2010, 2013, 2018. For 2022, God of War: Ragnarok has been announced, continuing the plot of the 2018 game.
The main protagonist and anti-hero of the game series is Kratos, a Spartan warrior and son of Zeus (demigod). Kratos is aggressive, cruel and incredibly strong from birth. He was born and trained to fight in Sparta. In the same place, Kratos started a family, became a great Spartan warrior and the best warrior of Ares. In order to eliminate all goals other than serving the war from his warrior's life, Ares tricked him into killing his family. Upon learning of this, Kratos broke his oath of allegiance to Ares and, with the help of other gods of Olympus, killed him in exchange for Athena's promise to save him from the nightmares caused by the murder of his own family. Upon learning that the promise could not be kept, Kratos tried to commit suicide, but Athena saved him and made him the new god of war.
The subsequent life of the anti-hero was marked by a constant struggle with other gods, titans and mythical creatures trying to kill him. Kratos kills almost the entire Olympic pantheon, including Zeus, opens Pandora's Box and, instead of transferring the divine power (hope) hidden in it to Athena, pierces himself with the Sword of Olympus. After that, people are freed from the wrath of the gods and each of them is given a drop of hope. Athena takes the sword and leaves, believing that Kratos is dead. But, as it turned out, he survived and fled from the past to the Scandinavian world. There he met a Fey warrior woman, with whom he had a son, Atreus.
The game of 2018 already tells about the confrontation between Kratos and Atreus with the Scandinavian gods. This part received many awards at the Game Awards 2018, including the title of game of the year. It presents an alternative take on Norse mythology that has been well received by gamers around the world.
At the moment, it is not known which specific part of the story of Kratos is going to be filmed by Amazon Prime. The people and studios allegedly involved in the production of the series do not respond to inquiries from the media and do not give any comments on this issue.
