Meta assured that the new moderation rules will apply only on the territory of Ukraine

Vice President of Meta Platforms Nick Clegg said on his Twitter that the new rules for content moderation will apply only on the territory of Ukraine. Clegg also indicated that the company will not tolerate Russophobia or other forms of discrimination against Russians on the platform.

Meta Platforms Vice President Nick Clegg"Our policy is to protect the right to free speech as a form of self-defense in response to a military invasion of their country. If we applied the standard rules without any adjustments, then we would have to remove the content of ordinary Ukrainians who express their resistance and anger towards the invading military forces in order to be rightly considered as an unacceptable phenomenon.

The new rules, according to Clegg, are only a temporary solution, which was taken in extraordinary and unprecedented circumstances. The company does not have a quarrel with the Russian people and changes in the policy regarding expressions of hatred against them.

On March 11, Reuters reported a change in the content moderation policy in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia and Ukraine. The company allowed to publish on Instagram and Facebook calls for violence against Russians and the Russian military, as well as to call for the death of Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. Summoning is allowed only if it does not target other people, and does not indicate the location of the [subject] or the method [of killing].

Upon learning of this, the Russian Embassy demanded that the United States stop the "extremist activities" of Meta. In addition, Roskomnadzor sent a request to the corporation to confirm or refute the information provided. Meta spokesman Andy Stone soon confirmed the data to Reuters on his microblog on Twitter.

In response, the Prosecutor General's Office sent a request to Roskomnadzor to restrict access to the Instagram social network. In addition, the agency filed an application with the court to recognize Meta Platforms Inc. extremist organization and the prohibition of its activities on the territory of the Russian Federation. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case in connection with illegal calls for murder and violence against citizens of the Russian Federation by employees of the American company Meta, which owns the social networks Facebook and Instagram.

After receiving a request from the Prosecutor General's Office, Roskomnadzor announced the blocking of the Instagram social network in the Russian Federation. The agency has given Instagram users until March 14 to transfer their photos and videos to other social networks. The source of the RIA Novosti publication said that WhatsApp would not be affected by the measures that could be introduced in Russia against Meta, since it is a means of communication, and not a source of placement.
