Media: Google has suspended work on linking the Mir card to Google Pay

According to the WSJ, Google, for its part, stopped all work on connecting the cards of the Russian payment system Mir to the Google Pay service.

Sources of the publication explained that Google was considering allowing customers of Mir cards to use them as part of Google Pay, but now this project has been closed, its pilot part has been stopped, and there are no plans to return to its discussion and implementation.

The National Payment Card System (NSPK) confirmed the information about the closure of the project by Google. “At the initiative of Google, the pilot project to launch the Google Pay service for Mir cards was suspended,” the NSPK explained.

In October 2021, the media reported that some Russian banks were able to connect their Mir cards to Google Pay. The timing of the connection was not called then, since the banks at that time explained that they had just begun work on introducing the Google Pay payment system into their applications. As a result, this project was never implemented due to Google's refusal to continue work.

Since March 10, Visa and Mastercard payment systems have stopped working in the Russian Federation. Their cards, issued by Russian banks, work within the country, but have become unavailable abroad. Also within the country, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay services stopped working for those users who linked Visa and Mastercard cards to them.

Google Pay does not support Mir cards, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay partially supported Mir cards from banks that are not under sanctions. At the end of March, Apple announced the suspension of the use of "Mir" in Apple Pay. NSPK (Mir's operator) has confirmed that already loaded Mir cards in Apple Pay will soon stop working. Apple Pay added Mir cards in April 2021.

The NSPK said that Mir Pay and SberPay are operating as usual. Samsung Pay explained that it continues to work within the Russian Federation using Mir cards.
