Import substitution, blockchain and drones: the main IT topics of the first half of the year

The main IT trends in the Russian media have been the growth of publications on import substitution and fluctuations in interest in technology. Increasingly, they write about drones and blockchain. And nowhere we can not get away from artificial intelligence in the near future. ICT.Moscow has collected and analyzed data for the first half of 2022.

Analysts stated that at the end of the first quarter of 2022, the interest of Russian-language media in techno topics cooled down and only began to partially recover in the summer. In addition to import substitution, journalists and bloggers were most concerned about blockchain, drones, virtual and augmented reality, 5G and artificial intelligence. Moreover, if more people began to be interested in blockchain and drones, then attention to VR / AR, 5G and artificial intelligence began to decline.

Compared to the previous half of the year, the number of all mentions of technology and related topics decreased by almost 12%, but compared to the first half of 2021, this figure increased by 1%.

Interest in blockchain has returned: it was mentioned 63% more often than in the first half of 2021, and 45% more often than in the second half of the year. In June, the number of publications mentioning the blockchain reached its maximum value since the beginning of research in 2019 - 11.7 thousand per month. Blockchain has become more frequently discussed in the context of the growth and development of digital financial assets, cryptocurrencies and NFTs. With the departure of SWIFT, digital currencies and related cybersecurity topics were discussed as an alternative for international settlements. The blockchain was also mentioned when they wrote about the metaverses and the concept of Web 3.0.

The surge of interest in the metaverse has been replaced by a more relaxed attitude, and VR / AR lost 20.1%. From a maximum of 12.4 thousand mentions in December 2021, they dropped to 8.7 thousand in June. But the technology remains in the top 5 by mentions. And the very concept of metaverses continues to be on the media agenda: on average, it was mentioned about 4 thousand times a month, and in February - 5.6 thousand times, and this is the maximum value.

The number of publications on artificial intelligence in March and May reached its lowest level since January 2019 (12.4 thousand per month).

There is a hype around 5G: in the six months of 2022, the most mentions of 5G were in January (8.8 thousand), after which the figure gradually decreased.
