Vedomosti: after blocking Twitch monetization, Russian cybersportsmen began to leave for other services

The most popular streaming platform for Russian cybersportsmen is Twitch, owned by the American company Amazon. The most popular streams on Twitch are tournaments for the tactical shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS GO) and the multiplayer game in the Dota 2 online arena, according to a study by Mediascope. Vedomosti writes about it.

In July, the Twitch audience was 5.6 million people aged 12-64, but compared to February, it decreased by 8%. In March, the service announced the suspension of payments to streamers from Russia.

Some of these users, after blocking monetization, were redistributed to other streaming platforms. For example, the number of users of the Chinese Trovo service in July increased by 119% compared to February and amounted to more than 800 thousand people. On this site, eSports fans prefer to watch World of Tanks streams.

The audience of the Wasd platform owned by MTS, according to Mediascope, in July increased by 221% compared to February and amounted to 545 thousand people. A spokesperson for the service says the platform has already crossed the one million monthly user mark. The most popular game on the site among cybersportsmen is Counter-Strike, according to Mediascope data.

Also, as a result of blocking monetization on the Twitch platform, streamers switched to the Russian platform Boosty. According to Mediascope, its audience grew by 249% by February and amounted to 2.1 million people.

According to Nielsen Sports data for 2020, the esports audience in Russia was 15.4 million people. In the same year, PwC valued this market at $28.6 million. The companies did not update this data later. The experts confirmed to Vedomosti the trend towards the redistribution of the Twitch audience and agreed that the key beneficiary would not be another streaming platform, but the VKontakte social network.
