US Academy of Sciences: 5G could interfere with old Pentagon GPS satellites

Building a terrestrial 5G network could interfere with older satellites used by the US Department of Defense. Possible risks are mentioned in the report of the American National Academy of Sciences (NAC).

Ligado Networks is preparing to start commissioning its 5G system next month, but the defense department is expressing concern over this, Voennoye Obozreniye writes. The NAC report indicated that satellites may experience harmful interference from the 5G network. We are talking not only about satellites of the Pentagon, but also 14 other US federal agencies. The conclusions of the NAC specialists are consistent with objections from federal agencies and the concerns of Iridium, its spokesman Jordan Hassin said.

According to the report of scientists, for most commercial, navigation, cellular GPS receivers, the Ligado 5G network will not cause interference. Ligado Networkd itself told Defense News that only the oldest and poorly designed devices may need to be upgraded in connection with the launch of the network.
