Google delays blocking third-party cookies in Chrome again

Google previously announced it was testing third-party cookie blocking for 1% of Chrome browser users. However, the company is now again delaying a larger rollout of the feature.

“We recognize the ongoing challenges of reconciling the diverse feedback from industry, regulators and developers, and will continue to work closely across the ecosystem in this area. It is also important that the CMA (UK Competition and Markets Authority) has enough time to review all the evidence, including industry test results, which it has asked market participants to provide by the end of June. "Given the importance of these aspects, we will not be able to complete our phase-out of third-party cookies in the second half of the fourth quarter," Google said.

Now Chrome won't likely phase out third-party cookies until 2025.

In 2020, Google said it intended to phase out third-party cookies "over two years" to improve user privacy. However, the company has already shifted these deadlines twice.

In April, Google announced a Chrome security feature called Device Bound Session Credentials (DBSC), which associates cookies with a user's specific device and prevents hackers from stealing and using them to hack accounts.
