TuSimple announced a successful 130 km test of an autonomous tractor without a man in the cab

TuSimple announced the successful completion of trials of a fully autonomous tractor unit on an open public highway. During the test, the vehicle moved without the presence of a person in the cab.

Tests began in Tucson, Arizona, and the route was nearly 130 kilometers. The test drive was carried out at night and the whole tractor took 1 hour and 20 minutes to overcome the planned route, which was built in such a way as to test the autonomous driving system for its ability to navigate in traffic, respond to traffic lights and road signs, rebuild and not interfere with other road users. It is important to note that the vehicle was completely controlled by the ADS TuSimple system - there was no person in the cab and the tractor was not controlled remotely.

TuSimple worked closely with state officials to ensure security. The first to go on the route was a car with researchers, whose tasks were to monitor the road and inform the team about emergencies. The distance between the research vehicle and the tractor was maintained at around eight kilometers throughout the experiment. And the truck was followed by representatives of the road service, who followed the order on the road while the drone was moving.

In total, in 2021, the company completed more than 1,800 test drives with a total length of 241 thousand kilometers, but the last test was marked precisely by the fact that the vehicle moved without a person in the cab. In 2022, the company plans to launch a new stage of test drives, and in 2024 is preparing to commercialize the technology.
