At CES 2022, Sony announced the launch of a new Sony Mobility division to develop and manufacture electric vehicles. Sony Mobility will begin its work in the spring of 2022. Through the division, Sony said it intends to explore the market for electric cars and hybrids.
At the exhibition, the company also showed an updated prototype of its Vision-S electric vehicle. The Vision-S project was first presented at CES 2020; in December of the same year, its tests began on the roads of Europe.
Two years later, Sony introduced the Vision-S 02 in a new crossover form factor. The car uses the same cloud computing platform as the Vision-S 01 prototype. The system supports CMOS sensors and LiDAR, and the company also plans to equip the electric car with Level 2+ driver assistance systems, which are currently undergoing validation tests.
The length of the model is 4.85 m; it is equipped with two 200 kW motors that will deliver 536 hp. There is no information about the acceleration of the Vision-S 02 yet, but its predecessor is capable of accelerating to 100 km / h in less than 5 seconds.
Late last year, the Japanese government approved a new carbon reduction program. In accordance with the plans of the authorities, by the mid-2030s, the production of completely gasoline and diesel cars will come to naught. and their place will be taken by hybrids and electric cars. According to the Japanese government, the adopted strategy will benefit the country's economy: the transition to electric vehicles will bring almost $ 900 billion by 2030 and more than 1.8 trillion over the next 20 years.
