Immervision, which calls itself the world's leading developer of advanced vision systems, announced the creation of an 8 megapixel wide-angle camera module for laptops and tablets. It is said to be the thinnest module of its kind. Its thickness is only 3.8 mm.

In responding to customers' needs for high-quality video conferencing, laptop makers face the difficult challenge of increasing video resolution and camera field of view when space is limited for advanced camera hardware, Immervision said. They have to find ways to shrink the lens and camera module. Many cannot achieve this and have to struggle with distorted images, low resolution cameras and narrow field of view that do not perform well in low light conditions.

“Working with OEMs, we've been able to help them maximize their field of view and image quality over the few millimeters of space available in today's devices,” commented Patrice Roulet Fontani, co-founder and vice president of technology at Immervision.
