Copenhagen’s AIR Lab wants to suck pollution out of the air and scrub it clean

The University of Copenhagen’s AIR Lab hopes to infuse air pollution-laden cities with pockets of fresh, breathable air. The team discovered a process that is similar to the Earth’s own that could be used to remove pollution from the air. Using an infusion of oxygen, ozone and UV Light, scientists can pull pollutant-rich dust from the air, cleansing it in the process, and giving city dwellers fresh, clean air.

The process is based on transforming pollutant gas molecules into something easier to remove - dust. The nature of gas molecules, which exist far apart from one another, make them difficult to remove, simple because they are hard to get a hold of. Dust, however, is much easier to grasp and remove.

AIR Lab’s dust-transforming process uses an infusion of ozone and UV light into pollutant gas to magnetize particles and get them to collect on a surface, which can then be cleaned. This method could be focused in residential cities, helping to diffuse pollution to create areas of better quality air for the population to breathe easy.
