Omicron broke the Delta record in Moscow and St. Petersburg

In Moscow, 11.5 thousand cases of coronavirus infection were detected over the past day, this is the maximum figure since the beginning of the pandemic. The previous record was set at the end of June, when the delta strain was spreading - then the daily maximum in the capital was 9.1 thousand people. Now, according to Vice Mayor Anastasia Rakova, 50% of the hospital beds are free in the city's hospitals. The Coronavirus Operational Headquarters has published statistics on coronavirus over the past 24 hours on its Telegram channel.

“11,557 cases were detected [in Moscow] per day, 2,307 people recovered per day, 70 people died per day,” the message says.

A new record was also set in St. Petersburg, where 4.7 thousand new cases of coronavirus infection were detected over the past day.

According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, 60% of cases of coronavirus infection in the country are due to the Delta strain, and 40% to Omicron. The symptoms of COVID-19 vary depending on the variations of the coronavirus. Omicron is more contagious, effectively protected by respirators than regular masks, but it usually causes less dangerous symptoms than delta. However, both strains can lead to hospitalization or even death, scientists say.

Now half of the beds for patients with COVID-19 are free in Moscow, while the proportion of hospitalized patients does not exceed 10% of the total number of cases. This was reported to journalists by the vice-mayor of Moscow for social development, the head of the operational headquarters Anastasia Rakova.

“As we expected, due to the spread of the Omicron strain in Moscow, a significant increase in the incidence of COVID-19 continues. Over the past week, the number of new cases has more than doubled, over the past two weeks - 2.7 times,” she stressed.

According to Rakova, the city authorities are monitoring the development of the situation and are preparing for different options for the future. At the same time, the upward trend in the incidence, judging by the increased infectiousness of "omicron", will continue in the foreseeable future.

Putin was informed about the situation in Moscow

The mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, during a working meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that the city's economy is coping with the coronavirus challenges, despite pessimistic forecasts.

“There were many forecasts that the pandemic, the economy would not cope with these challenges, there would be serious problems in the socio-economic sphere, and so on. The preliminary results of the year show that the economy is coping with these challenges and has adapted to the difficult conditions in which we operate. In almost all indicators, we have gone into positive territory not only by 2020, the difficult year, but also by 2019, the base year,” the mayor said.

Trade, investment, construction and industrial production have gone up. In the last two areas, growth is observed by a quarter and a third, respectively (23% and 28%).

“During the closed part of the conversation with the President, the Mayor of Moscow informed him in detail about the situation with the spread of a new wave of coronavirus in Moscow associated with the emergence of a new strain of Omicron,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said after the meeting./i

Two days earlier, Sobyanin said that anti-COVID measures were being maintained in Moscow until April 1. The home regime is being extended for people from risk groups (the elderly and those with chronic diseases), as well as the requirement for employers to transfer 30% of employees to remote work.
