Parents of underage patients will have easier access to the intensive care unit

In Russia, it is planned to simplify the admission of parents of sick children to intensive care units. Such an initiative was made by the Children's Palliative Foundation, one of the participants in the Open Resuscitation project. According to Izvestia, a pilot project has already been carried out in the country.

In hospitals in eight regions of the country, from September 2020 to November 2021, the access of parents to intensive care units where their children were located was facilitated. The project included: Primorsky and Khabarovsk regions, Udmurtia, Karelia, Tatarstan, Tambov, Tyumen and Kaliningrad regions.

In parallel, a study was conducted on how the stay of parents affects the condition of children in intensive care, doctors and the work of medical institutions.

57.1% of doctors positively assessed the family's assistance in resuscitation. Among them, 42.2% reported “good” parental care for patients, 14.9% of hospital workers suggested that adults be given “excellent”.

Parents helped the staff in carrying out sanitary and hygienic procedures and in feeding the children. Parents also monitored the operation of the equipment that was connected to the patient.
