Russia - Bacterial resistance to antibiotics

Russia (bbabo.net), - The death rate from bacterial resistance to antibiotics is now second only to stroke and coronary heart disease. This conclusion was made by an international group of scientists who analyzed data for 2019 for 204 countries.

It is estimated that around five million people worldwide have died from various infections. Of these, about 1.27 million deaths were directly due to antibiotic resistance. Most infections were caused by just six resistant bacteria: E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, pneumococcus, Bauman's Acinetobacterium, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The researchers compared their estimates with existing cause-of-death data and ranked antibiotic resistance third after coronary heart disease and stroke.

Scientists offer several ways to combat resistance: prevent the spread of infections in hospitals, implement water sanitation and vaccination, limit the use of antibiotics on farms, do not use antibiotics in the treatment of viral infections, and invest in the development of new drugs.
