Graphene Shows Promise For Brain Implants

Italian scientists from the University of Trieste created a unique graphene electrodes that can be implanted into the brain,as Tech Crunch writes.

Graphene is the most lightweight, durable and electrically conductive carbon compound. Implanting graphene electrodes into the human brain, scientists will be able to stimulate neurons, which will help to strengthen the lost motor functions of individual parts of the body. For example, a paralyzed man would be able to walk again and move his arms, and amputees will be capable of moving robotic arms or legs with their mind.

In addition, the development will help treat epilepsy and other neurological disorders. Graphene electrodes can restore sensory function of the brain. Scientists believe that graphene is a durable material suitable for deep implantation into the brain. Other materials, such as tungsten, which has previously been used for similar purposes, haven't shown such good results.
