Russia (bbabo.net), - 244 years after the shipwreck in US waters, the ship of the famous navigator James Cook has been identified. It is reported by australiangeographic.com.
The ship was found at the bottom of the harbor of Newport in the United States. Cook's ship has played an important role in astronomy and science and has become an important artifact in the history of Australia, New Zealand, the UK and now the US. From 1768 to 1771 Endeavor sailed the South Pacific, primarily to record the transit of Venus in Tahiti in 1769. Cook circumnavigated the South Pacific in search of the "Great South Land", charting the coast of New Zealand and the east coast of Australia.
“After a 22-year program of archival and archaeological research on object RI2394, we can convincingly confirm that this is indeed the wreck of Cook's ship,” Kevin Sumption, director general of the Australian National Maritime Museum, announced.
Such a claim became possible after comparing the remains of the ship with the plans of the ship of the 18th century. Now researchers are working on the preservation of historical remains.
