Russia registers new drug for COVID-19

The Ministry of Health of Russia has registered a drug for the treatment of coronavirus under the international name Molnupiravir. It is reported by RIA Novosti, referring to the state register of medicines.

The drug received permanent registration from the agency on December 3.

“Trade name: ESPERAVIR. International non-proprietary name: "Molnupiravir"

The registry states that the drug will be produced in capsules of 200 and 400 mg.

As Peter Bely, the chairman of the board of directors of the Russian pharmaceutical company Promomed, told the agency, this drug can reduce the risks of deterioration and hospitalization.

“In a sense, Esperavir is a new word in the treatment of coronavirus, because it acts on a different site of this enzyme (RdRP). The virus does not yet know such a blow, it does not expect it, ”said the head of the company.

He noted that COVID-19 patients who take such a drug will have more tools to achieve a cure.

“Yes, the virus does not yet know that it will be hit on this target, and therefore will not prepare the appropriate mutation. We have gained a lot of time from this virus,” Bely said, answering the question of whether the new drug is ahead of the coronavirus mutation.

At the end of December last year, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation released the 14th version of guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19.

Information about the new strain of coronavirus "omicron" has been added to the list, information on the clinical features of the infection and its epidemiological characteristics have also been updated.

The section "Etiotropic treatment" was also updated. It added information about new drugs against coronavirus - molnupiravir, also known as Mir-19 from the Institute of Immunology of the FMBP, as well as nirmatrelvir in combination with ritonavir - probably Paxlovid, developed by Pfizer, or its analogue. In addition, now doctors will be able to use the drug favipiravir by injecting it into a patient's vein.
