Virologist spoke about the timing of the end of the COVID-19 pandemic

Director of the Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after G.P. Somov of Rospotrebnadzor, Head of the Department of Epidemiology of the School of Biomedicine of the Far Eastern Federal University Mikhail Shchelkanov said that the world will live in a coronavirus pandemic, perhaps for another three years, but much in the current situation will depend on the growth rate of herd immunity. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

“There are a large number of regional features, but if we talk about the general long-term trend, then we should be prepared for the fact that in 2022 we will still be in a pandemic, as well as in 2023 and, possibly, 2024,” Shchelkanov said.

A lot will depend on how quickly the herd immunity level rises and whether it keeps up with the variability of the coronavirus, he said.

Earlier, the head of Rospotrebnadzor in Russia, Anna Popova, said that a subspecies of the “omicron” strain VA.2 had been identified in several regions of Russia.

According to her, the BA.2 line was recorded in Moscow, the Republic of Mari El, the Rostov Region, the Republic of Bashkortostan.
