The omicron subspecies of the BA.2 coronavirus strain has been identified in 44 regions of Russia. Kamil Khafizov, head of the scientific group for the development of new diagnostic methods based on sequencing technologies of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, told about this in an interview with the Interfax agency.
According to him, this is not a surprise in terms of the evolution of viruses. Khafizov stressed that the world's first sample of the BA.2 line was discovered on November 17, 2021 in South Africa and by now it has been registered in more than 50 countries.
Earlier, the head of Rospotrebnadzor in Russia, Anna Popova, said that a subspecies of the “omicron” strain VA.2 had been identified in several regions of Russia. According to her, the BA.2 line was recorded in Moscow, the Republic of Mari El, the Rostov Region, the Republic of Bashkortostan.
In Russia, 17,525 new cases of coronavirus infection have been detected over the past day. At the same time, 13% of new infections did not have clinical manifestations of the disease.
