Immunologist, candidate of medical sciences Nikolai Kryuchkov told URA.RU that animals and HIV-positive people can become key sources of new strains of COVID-19.
“Ordinary people can also be a source of new strains of covid, but they need to have serious evolution in time. It's just less likely. In this sense, people with immunodeficiencies are much more dangerous, not only for the population, but also for themselves, because they are protractedly ill. Well, and animals, ”the doctor explained.
According to him, the virus in animals mutates a little differently and in some cases can unexpectedly infect humans.
“For animals, selection operates on other factors, a different genetic composition, but it can suddenly turn out to be very suitable for humans and jump back. At some point, one of these mutations may come to court for the human population. The virus will not lose its pathogenicity for humans," Kryuchkov said.
Earlier, the head of Rospotrebnadzor in Russia, Anna Popova, said that a subspecies of the “omicron” strain VA.2 had been identified in several regions of Russia. She also noted that a variety of “omicron” BA.3 was not found in the country.
