EP spoke about the future of the waste recycling industry

During a meeting of the working group of the Federation Council on monitoring the implementation of the federal project "Infrastructure for the treatment of waste of hazard classes 1-2", First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee Alexander Mazhuga said that in the next five years, one of the most sought-after professions will be an environmental engineer.

“A circular economy is being built around the world. Production waste becomes a new commodity. For our country, the waste processing industry is new. Any new industry requires the training of specialists, and the formation of a scientific and technical reserve. A specialist in this field (industrial ecologist) must have a wide range of knowledge in the field of chemical engineering, ecology and even economics. I am sure that in less than 5 years, the profession of an ecologist will be one of the most in demand,” he said.

The parliamentarian stressed that the Constitution of the Russian Federation states that the government is obliged to take measures to reduce the negative impact on the environment. He also recalled that the United Russia people's program highlights environmental well-being as a separate, key task.

“The “Ecology for Life” block includes a set of measures that will significantly improve the environmental situation in the country in the next five years. This is the creation of an effective mechanism for the return of secondary material resources to economic circulation, ensuring the creation of capacities and conditions for waste disposal, minimizing the volume of waste disposal,” Mazhuga explained.

In his opinion, the issue of timely preparation and staffing for the launch of an integrated waste management system for 1st and 2nd classes is quite acute.

“The emerging infrastructure requires a significant increase in the number of university graduates who are specialists in the field of waste processing. At the moment, it is important to reconsider the approach to training such personnel, to take into account the opinion of employers when drawing up educational programs,” the deputy concluded.
