The term for consideration of applications for admission to Russian citizenship in the general manner, as well as people who have received political asylum, refugees and military under contract in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, may be reduced. Currently, applications are considered throughout the year, it is proposed to reduce this period to three months, TASS reports, citing the press center of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In December 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted to the State Duma a draft law “On Citizenship of the Russian Federation”. The document highlights the key requirements for obtaining citizenship: knowledge of the Russian language, Russian history and the basics of legislation, as well as the obligation to abide by the constitution and the absence of a threat to the country's security.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that this bill involves the transfer to the department and its territorial bodies of the authority to consider applications for admission to Russian citizenship. It is planned that the ministry will be made responsible for making decisions on admission to the citizenship of the Russian Federation in relation to certain categories of persons, decisions on which are now being made by the President of Russia.

For these categories of citizens, they intend to reduce the time for consideration of applications for admission to citizenship, the Ministry of Internal Affairs noted.

They pointed out that only the admission to Russian citizenship on an exceptional basis will remain in the jurisdiction of the head of state. This will apply to veterans of the Great Patriotic War who are citizens of the countries of the former USSR. This also applies to people who have special merits to Russia, and persons who, by virtue of their profession, are of particular interest to the country.
