Case of another member of Basayev's gang sent to court

The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation approved the indictment in a criminal case of encroachment on the life of military personnel in Chechnya in 2000.

“The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation has approved an indictment in a criminal case against a member of an armed gang. He is accused of committing a crime under Art. 317 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (encroachment on the life of military personnel in order to obstruct the lawful activities of these persons to protect public order and ensure public safety),” the ministry said in a statement.

According to investigators, the accused was a member of a gang led by Shamil Basayev and Khattab, and in February-March 2000 he committed an armed attack on Russian soldiers in Chechnya. As a result of the clash, 84 servicemen were killed.

The case was sent to the Shatoisky District Court of the Chechen Republic for consideration on the merits.

The battle at height 776 took place on February 29, 2000 near the village of Ulus-Kert in the Shatoi region of Chechnya. The clash began a few hours after Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev announced the end of the war. Paratroopers of the 6th company of the 104th regiment of the 76th Pskov airborne division, consisting of 90 people, repelled attacks by superior forces of Chechen fighters from Basayev's gang for more than a day. From the Chechen side, up to 2.5 thousand militants and Arab mercenaries took part in the battle. After stubborn resistance and defense of positions, only six paratroopers from the entire 6th company survived, four of whom received injuries of varying severity.

Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded 21 paratroopers of the 6th company the title of Hero of Russia posthumously, another 68 soldiers and officers of the company were awarded the Order of Courage (63 of them received orders posthumously). Sergeant Alexander Suponinsky is the only survivor who received the title of Hero of Russia.

In November last year, Basayev's gang member Magomed Alkhanov, who escaped from a mental hospital in Astrakhan, was detained and placed in a pre-trial detention center.
