Price growth is inevitable

Experts believe that one of the main reasons for the increase in car prices is the shortage of new cars that has been going on for more than a year and a half. According to Sergey Tselikov, General Director of the Avtostat analytical agency, against this background, automakers act in accordance with the laws of the market: in conditions of increased demand for cars, they increase their prices.

“Over the past 10-15 years, I have never seen cars become cheaper. Prices for cars are only growing: in some year a little more, in some a little less, ”he said.

The expert noted that in terms of the increase in the average cost of new cars, last year was a record for the last few years: cars in Russia went up by 17-20%.

This year, the upward trend in prices will continue, but their growth will not be as large as in the past, Tselikov is sure. According to his forecasts, by the end of autumn and the beginning of winter, cars will rise in price by another 5-7%.

A more pessimistic forecast is given by Sergei Burgazliev, an independent automotive industry consultant.

By the end of the year, car prices will rise by 12-15%, the expert believes.

He notes that the inevitable rise in the price of new machines is due not only to the high demand for them, but also to the increase in the cost of their production. According to him, last year the cost of steel, polymers, rubber and other raw materials, which are used in the automotive industry, increased markedly. In addition, due to the global shortage of semiconductors, almost all automakers have incurred additional costs for the purchase of electronic components, Burgazliev added.

“Given the massive shortage of chips, their manufacturers have sharply raised the prices of their products. Tariffs for logistics services have also grown significantly - by 30-40% in some areas. Naturally, automakers include these costs in the cost of cars, ”the expert said in an interview with.

According to Burgazliev, in order not to scare away potential buyers with a sharp rise in prices, automakers will raise the RRP every few months.

In confirmation of his words, BMW announced today, February 9, an increase in retail prices for some BMW models in March, April and May.
