Russia - Popova: Omicron causes pneumonia in 6.5% of cases

Russia (bbabo.net) - Infection with the Omicron strain of coronavirus causes pneumonia in 6.5% of cases, Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor, said.

"To date, in general, 15,287 cases have been identified in our country caused by a confirmed genovariant of the omicron virus. Cases have been registered in 83 subjects, 77.5% of this number of observations are related to ARVI in clinical forms, and 6.5% in pneumonia, the asymptomatic form is 16%," Popova said at a meeting of the Presidium of the Coordinating Council for Combating COVID-19.

The chief sanitary doctor noted that 70% of the sick were not vaccinated, 95% had not previously had a new coronavirus infection.

According to her, "omicron" is rapidly spreading around the world, in six weeks the number of confirmed cases in the world has increased by almost 30 times.

As of February 2, 80,875 genomic sequences have been uploaded to the Russian database. Of these, 8239 downloaded are the "omicron" genovariant.

“I want to say that we are closely following the further development of the situation and the mutations within this variant. To date, 253 sequences belong to the BA.2 line, this is 3%, and the BA.3 line has not been detected in the Russian Federation,” she said. Popov.

The vast majority of cases that belong to BA.2 were identified in Moscow, Mari El, Rostov region, Bashkiria. “I am focusing on this, because a number of countries speak of an even higher contagiousness of this line,” Popova explained.
