Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, State Duma Deputy Anton Gorelkin said that the state needs to develop a mechanism for regulating meta-infections.
“We see that a number of large companies have already announced plans to develop their own virtual reality projects. Obviously, these projects will develop as companies invest heavily in these projects,” he said.
Gorelkin emphasized that developed countries are already developing regulation of the metaverses to protect the digital rights of citizens. And our country is no exception.
“Unfortunately, we see that online platforms cannot guarantee the protection of the interests of citizens. This task should be undertaken by the state - it should be where the citizens are, ”the deputy believes.
According to him, numerous lawsuits initiated by the regulators of major digital powers, including the regulator of our country, indicate that the largest IT companies cannot prevent risks for users.
“Our task is to create the most comfortable conditions for our citizens. No online platform, regardless of whether it is a metaverse or a familiar social network, can take on the role of the state, especially when it comes to tax regulation, the circulation of significant funds, the fight against fraud or the dissemination of destructive content. Gorelkin noted.
He stressed that IT-corporations have already proved their inadequacy in this matter.
“There is a huge temptation for such companies to manipulate users with the help of algorithms. Only the state is still able to protect the rights of users in any segment of the Internet,” the deputy concluded.
