Experts spoke about the risks of neurocovid after omicron

The head of the Laboratory for Especially Dangerous Infections of the Federal Research Center for Fundamental and Translational Medicine (FRC FTM), Professor of Virology Alexander Chepurnov, told RBC that the occurrence of neurocovid after "omicron" largely depends on the individual characteristics of the organism.

“So some people lose their sense of smell, others don’t. Some recover quickly, others slowly, and some have damage to the nervous tissue. Individual characteristics have a strong effect, ”the expert explained.

Immunologist, Head of the Laboratory of Vaccine Prevention and Immunotherapy of Allergic Diseases, Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums named after V.I. I. Mechnikov Mikhail Kostinov expressed the opinion that neurocovid and longcovid after "omicron" is possible "theoretically". At the same time, in the case of longcovid, much depends on the age of the patient, concomitant diseases, early diseases, and also on the presence of vaccination.

“As for the neurocovid, as a rule, after all, we are talking about the defeat of individual organs. More often, a situation occurs when the virus affects, for example, separately blood clotting, sense of smell, and the central nervous system. Now one of the symptoms is bone pain. Previously, there were more in the muscles. Inflammatory phenomena in the bone marrow can also now occur, ”says Kostinov.

Earlier, Andrei Isaev, general director of the DNCOM Research Center for Molecular Genetic Research, warned that the “omicron” strain, which many consider relatively harmless, can lead to neurocovid and longcovid in adults, as well as cause systemic inflammation in children.
