Russian Ambassador to Japan Responds to US Ambassador's Criticism over Kuril Islands

Russian Ambassador to Japan Mikhail Galuzin has responded to criticism from US Ambassador to Tokyo Rahm Emanuel. This was reported on the page of the Russian diplomatic mission on Twitter.

Earlier, an American diplomat criticized his Russian counterpart for his statements related to the southern Kuril Islands, which in Japan are called the "northern territories."

“It is difficult to imagine a more inopportune moment than the one that the Russian ambassador chose to threaten Japan. He doesn't realize that next Monday [in Japan] is Northern Territories Day. Rules and respect are important,” Emanuel wrote on his Twitter page.

In response, Galuzin stressed that the time was right, since Russia does not recognize illegal territorial claims to the Southern Kuriles that belong to it and the “festivities” associated with it.

The Ambassador recalled that the transfer of these territories to the Soviet Union was clearly fixed in the Yalta Agreement of 1945, signed by the USSR, the USA and Great Britain.

Earlier in January, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said that the country allegedly owns four Kuril Islands located closer to the Kamchatka Peninsula, which Russia considers its territory.
