The virologist said that the victims of the pandemic could be 2% of the world's population

Virologist, director of the Center for the Global Virological Network of the United States Konstantin Chumakov spoke on Radio Russia about what the world could be like if scientists had failed to create vaccines against coronavirus.

“If we allowed this virus to run rampant like this, then 2% of the world’s population would die out,” he suggested.

Thanks to the fact that vaccines against COVID-19 have been developed and due to the fact that this virus has changed towards less pathogenicity, the world is now probably at the end of the pandemic, according to the specialist.

Earlier, the director of the Gamaleya Center, Alexander Gintsburg, said that the omicron strain of coronavirus cannot be considered the last stage of the pandemic.

A number of virologists support the same point of view. So, the head of the department of the First State Medical University. Sechenov, Vitaly Zverev noted that Omicron will not become the final stage of the pandemic, but after it the coronavirus will decline.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that Omicron could end the coronavirus pandemic in Europe. For some time after the surge in cases of this variant of COVID-19 in Europe, there may be a global immunity due to vaccines, as a result of infection or due to seasonal patterns, according to WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge.

Russia became the first country in the world to register a vaccine against COVID-19. The drug was developed by the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology together with the Russian Direct Investment Fund and was named Sputnik V. Subsequently, the vaccines EpiVacCorona, KoviVac, Sputnik Light, Sputnik M, and EpiVaccorona-N were registered.
