Four defendants in a criminal case on embezzlement of funds allocated for cleaning the city from snow and ice in St. Petersburg were sentenced in the Vasileostrovskiy District Court, TASS reports.

“Vasileostrovsky District Court of St. Petersburg considered the petition of the investigation to choose a measure of restraint in the form of detention in respect of Ivan Makarchuk, suspected of committing a crime under Part 4 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, ”the court said in a statement.

However, the court sent Makarchuk under house arrest until April 8, and his alleged accomplices - Alexei Veselozerov, Dmitry Nesterenko and Anna Orekhova - were banned by the court from certain actions.

According to investigators, four suspects entered into two state contracts with St. Petersburg for cleaning the Vasileostrovsky district of the city, but the work was not completed, and the suspects' firm was unable to fulfill the contract.

Earlier, a Petersburger was sent under house arrest for poor snow removal.
