The former mayor of Riga criticized the statements of the President of Latvia about the Russian language

The former mayor of Riga, Nil Ushakov, criticized the statement of the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, that the second foreign language in the country's schools should be one of the official EU languages, and not Russian. He wrote about this Facebook.

According to him, there are not enough teachers of mathematics, physics, chemistry in Latvian schools, but "the president does not care about such trifles." He also commented on Levits' statement about "protecting the country from the Russian language."

“Tell me, in Latvia you can become a patriot only if the goal of your life is to fight the Russian language? And no one tried to become a patriot at the expense of good deeds for their country? asked Ushakov.

Earlier, residents of Latvia have already sent more than 300 lawsuits to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), in which they challenge the language reform in the schools of the country's national minorities.

This party has become one of the initiators of these appeals. Its representatives noted that the next winter campaign to file claims with the ECHR on the problem of the language of instruction in Russian schools in Latvia has been completed.
