Scientists from the laboratory of cytogenetics of the Research Institute of Medical Genetics of the Tomsk National Research Medical Center found that the presence of an extra chromosome 16 most often leads to spontaneous abortion in the first three months. Studies have shown that in cells with an extra chromosome 16, one of the basic mechanisms of genome regulation, DNA methylation, is disrupted.
Due to this feature, the embryo may receive less nutrients and develop with delays.
