Russia - Russianist from Syria: My students give concerts at Russian military bases

Russia (bbabo.net), - "How much joy children give to our military when they sing songs in Russian. How many stingy male tears we see. And it is not clear who is happier - children, spectators or me...", - writes in her essay "From the language of the Union to the language of the World: why are they learning Russian today" for the International Pushkin Competition, Russian specialist from Syria Natalya Kolonskikh.

For the past eleven years, says the teacher, Syria has been going through hard times. But it was at this time that she was lucky to find herself in a new worthy profession - a teacher of Russian as a foreign language.

Natalia graduated from a technical university back in 1992 and has been living in Syria ever since. Now she works in the Latakia region, the city of Jable.

According to the author of the essay, the project to introduce the Russian language as a subject in the country's schools made it possible for many compatriots, graduates of universities throughout the Soviet Union, living in Syria, to find a worthy new job. By the way, the Syrians themselves teach the Russian language in the schools of Syria. Among them are graduates of Russian and Soviet universities who have forever fallen in love with Russia, the Russian language, the Russian people, its traditions and culture. Also, graduates of the Department of the Russian Language of the State University of Damascus are joining the ranks of Russian language teachers. Russians, Ukrainians, and compatriots from Uzbekistan, Moldova and other former Soviet republics work here.

Natalya Kolonskikh believes that it is very important to preserve and pass on to the younger generation the truth about the victories and achievements of Russia and the USSR, especially today, when they are trying to defile this truth ...

The teacher first of all tries to protect his wards from the negative against Russia and the Russian language. Her students, Syrian schoolchildren, are now winners and laureates of various international competitions and festivals. Every year they participate in the "Reading Pushkin" contests, in Pushkin festivals, "Live Classics" contests and other wonderful events.

To the question "Why do they learn Russian today?" Syrians answer: "To go to Russia." Moreover, the author of the essay knows firsthand that this is the dream of any Syrian student.

The first song that the Russianist taught her students was "Solar Circle". “During those first years of the war, I often had a lump in my throat and tears flowed when I listened to this song performed by Syrian children…” she recalls.

By chance, the children's group, led by their teacher, found themselves with their concert in front of the Russian military. This was a huge incentive to study the Russian language. Now the motto "Syrian children with love and gratitude to Russia" is pronounced by her wards at every concert at the base. They have more than a hundred songs in their repertoire. And they perform to the live accompaniment of military bands. They were also invited to the Damascus Opera House for concerts in honor of the Victory over the Nazi invaders - on May 9th.
