The Union of Pedestrians urged to reduce the speed limit near the zebras

In Russia, the speed of cars should be limited near pedestrian crossings, since about half of the collisions with people occur in these areas. The chairman of the Pedestrian Union of Russia, Vladimir Sokolov, told RIA Novosti about this.

In 2020, motorists knocked down about 4.5 thousand pedestrians, while 40% of the accidents occurred at pedestrian crossings, and 14% in their immediate vicinity, Sokolov cited data from the traffic safety research center at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“Thus, if we eliminate 54% of car collisions in the zone of pedestrian crossings, then we will solve a lot of safety problems ... It is not enough for pedestrians to be illuminated: there is paint, a traffic light, it is necessary to ensure a reduction in the speed limit,” he said.

The need to reduce the speed is also evidenced by the fact that at regulated pedestrian crossings, collisions occur more often than at unregulated ones (1.9 times more per one crossing), the expert noted.

“There are many examples when reducing the speed limit even by 10 km/h gave an effect that could not be achieved with investments of 1 billion rubles,” he added.

Earlier it became known that Russia has developed a unified standard of requirements for the safety of pedestrians, it can be adopted until 2023. RosdorNII experts suggest slowing down cars in residential areas with the help of crossroads raised above the roadway, introducing speed limits at the entrances to the "zebras" and raised crossings near schools and kindergartens.
